BARRY KLEIN
Vice Chancellor for Research

Barry M. Klein, Vice Chancellor for Research and professor of physics at the University of California, Davis, received his B.S. degree in Engineering Physics in 1962 and M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in physics in 1965 and 1969, respectively, all at New York University. Klein served at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C. in research and scientific leadership positions in condensed matter physics and complex systems theory from 1969-1992. He also served in a scientific leadership capacity at the National Science Foundation from 1984-1985 while on leave from NRL. He has given invited presentations at premier conferences, universities and research laboratories worldwide, and he has served on many important scientific advisory panels and boards. Klein joined the UC Davis faculty in 1992 and served as chair of the Department of Physics from 1992-1998 and as vice provost for academic personnel from 1998-2001. He was appointed vice chancellor for research in July 2001, with his primary area of responsibility being advancing the research and outreach missions of UC Davis.

BERND HAMANN
Associate Vice Chancellor for Interdisciplinary Research Administration and Academic Personnel

Bernd Hamann 2009 Bernd Hamann, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and professor of computer science at the University of California, Davis, received a B.S. degree in computer science, a B.S. degree in mathematics, and an M.S. degree in computer science from the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Arizona State University in 1991. He joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science at UC Davis in 1995, where his research has focused on visualization, computer graphics, and computer-aided design. He has given invited presentations at premier conferences, universities and research laboratories worldwide. From 1997 to 2004, Hamann served as co-director of the Center for Image Processing and Integrated Computing (CIPIC), an organized research unit (ORU), which is now called the Institute for Data Analysis and Visualization (IDAV). Hamann had a 50% appointment as associate vice chancellor for research between August 2003 and September 2007, and has a 75% appointment in his role effective October 2007. His primary area of responsibility is oversight of large- scale or multi- and inter-disciplinary research efforts, including Organized Research Units, Organized Research Projects, Central Facilities and Special Research Programs.

LESLYE HAYS
Assistant Vice Chancellor for Business and Administration

Leslye Hays - small Leslye J. Hays, was appointed as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Business Administration in July 2008. Hays is the principal administrative officer for the Office of Research (OR), with responsibility and oversight for research administration, budget planning, fiscal control, compliance and risk management, personnel management, strategic planning, capital planning, space allocation, and policy development. Areas of responsibility include: Research Administration: Sponsored Programs, Institutional Review Board, and Research Compliance & Integrity; Business Administration: Human Resources, Financial Services, Information Systems & Support, Executive Support and Communications. Hays has been with UC Davis since 1981 and has served in senior management positions on campus, including Benefits Manager of the Employee Benefits office, and most recently as Executive Officer for the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost.
