Alaisha M. Hellman Appointed Director of Research Ethics and Compliance Office

The University of California, Davis, Office of Research is pleased to announce the selection of Alaisha M. Hellman as the new director of the Research Ethics and Compliance Office, effective April 11, 2023.

The Research Ethics and Compliance Office, formerly named Research Compliance and Integrity, provides oversight and services to ensure that research conducted at UC Davis complies with all applicable policies and regulations. The team offers support to researchers across the campus to raise awareness, provide training and assist with related processes.

Hellman comes to the role with more than 15 years of experience in research administration, compliance and program management. Before joining UC Davis, Hellman served in the role of Export Control (EC) Officer and Conflict of Interest (COI) Coordinator at UC Berkeley where she created and managed the respective programs. She also has experience with foreign influence and related compliance concerns, policies and processes.

“Hellman has proven to be a strong leader and contributor in managing and resolving complex export control and research compliance matters, and I am thrilled to see her assume the role of director at RECO,” said Denise Ehlen, associate vice chancellor for Research Administration and Central Services and interim associate vice chancellor for Innovation and Technology Commercialization. “Hellman’s extensive knowledge of research compliance combined with her strong motivation to forge pathways for collaboration, training and outreach offer a great opportunity to elevate the work of the unit.”

Hellman holds a ​​Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. She is a member of the Association of University Export Control Officers, Society for International Affairs and the AAMC Forum on Conflict of Interest.
