Studies, Clinical Trials, and Pre-clinical Trials Involving Animals

On occasion, individuals from other research institutions wish to conduct studies at the University of California, Davis. These institutions may be other UC campuses, universities, governmental agencies, or private corporations. The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for the proper conduct of all research and teaching activities using animals at UC Davis, regardless of the source of funding of the project.

Procedure

If an outside research entity, public or private, wishes to make use of UC Davis facilities, they must establish a working relationship with a Davis investigator who oversees the project for them. The UC Davis faculty/staff member serves as principal investigator (PI) for purposes of the Protocol for Animal Care and Use. The UC Davis investigator must assume the responsibility for appropriate supervision of the project, training of project staff, and must serve as the primary contact for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee or IACUC and for the Campus Attending Veterinarian. The UC Davis investigator must have appropriate supervisory authority to oversee the conduct of the project at UC Davis, and follow the guidelines in the “Use of Davis Animal Facilities by Faculty of Other Institutions”.

There are some animal facilities on campus, including the Teaching and Research Animal Care Services (TRACS) and the California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) that will discuss possible collaborations with industry and provide assistance in facilitating an effective working relationship between a company and a UC Davis researcher.

Agreements

The faculty Principal Investigator (PI) for the project or his/her business officer will work with the appropriate UC Davis office, either Purchasing & Business Contracts or Sponsored Programs, to put the appropriate agreement in place for the work.  Key issues of this agreement may include:

  • Confidentiality
  • Data rights/publications
