The UC Davis Grand Challenges initiative was developed to solve some of today’s most complex and pressing challenges by assembling teams of experts from multiple disciplines. The program, which was initiated as the Interdisciplinary Frontiers Program, combines imaginative research teams with innovative thinkers that inspire breakthroughs in areas of vital concern such as food supply, health and economic distress. Select from the following two complementary sub-programs to learn more.
This collaborative approach allows UC Davis to leverage its strength as one of the most comprehensive campuses which includes four Colleges (Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Letters & Science) and six Professional Schools (Education, Law, Management, Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine).
Over $14 million were invested into the teams of experts assembled from diverse fields of study that embody our unique interdisciplinary roots. The Research Investments in the Sciences and Engineering (RISE) consists of thirteen teams tackling challenges in agriculture, data sciences, energy and health. Seven Interdisciplinary Frontiers in the Humanities and Arts (IFHA) teams focus on economic, political and social challenges. Please follow the links above to learn more about each interdisciplinary team and the specific challenges they are addressing.
