Team Research Forum: BioEM Exploring Molecular Machines at Atomic Detail

event information

Join the Office of Research on Friday, May 6th at 10:30 am for a showcase of scientific insights from the BioEM Core at UC Davis.

Learn about this unique facility housed at UC Davis, and how you can access equipment, training, and expertise in cryo-Electron Microscopy (cryoEM).

The panel will present an overview of BioEM capabilities and services along with recent milestones from three of our major users in determining structures of novel protein complexes involved in energy production and medicine.

Enoch Baldwin
Associate Professor
Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology
College of Biological Sciences
UC Davis

Dr. Baldwin is the Faculty Director of the UC Davis BioEM Core. His research has focused on using biomolecule structure and biochemistry to determine the molecular basis for protein-DNA recognition and regulation of cytidine triphosphate biosynthesis.

James A. Letts
Associate Professor
Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology
College of Biological Sciences
UC Davis

Dr. Letts’ research focuses on understanding the mechanism of electron transport membrane proteins, a varied class of enzymes essential for energy transduction and cellular defense/signaling. He researches both the basic biology of these enzymes and translational applications to human health and disease.

Jawdat Al-Bassam
Associate Professor
Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology
College of Biological Sciences
UC Davis

Dr. Al-Bassam research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of the biogenesis and dynamic polymerization of the microtubule cytoskeleton. His laboratory utilizes imaging approaches spanning multiple resolution scales to explore the biochemical and physical mechanisms of multi-subunit macromolecular machines that regulate the microtubule cytoskeleton in relation to both their native and diseased states.

Jennifer Cash
Assistant Professor
Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology
College of Biological Sciences
UC Davis

Dr. Cash’s research focuses on understanding how proteins communicate and send signals within the body. She is a structural biologist and biochemist and aims to determine how the structure of a protein dictates its function and its interactions with other proteins. She is particularly interested in proteins implicated in cancer metastasis.

Fei Guo
EM Facility Director
College of Biological Sciences
UC Davis

Dr. Guo coordinates and assists structural biology research using cryo-electron microscopy. His expertise is cryo-EM imaging and single particle analysis.
