UC Davis and LLNL expand collaboration, targeting new areas like high energy density science

The University of California, Davis, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand collaborations in research initiatives and educational opportunities.
“This agreement builds on a long-standing partnership and leverages the strengths of both institutions,” says UC Davis Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Paul Dodd. The agreement targets four areas of strategic alignment: physical sciences and engineering; high performance computing and advanced data analytics; geosciences; and biology. “We are very excited about the potential of our teams to make significant contributions in these areas,” Dodd added.
In recognition of the emerging global opportunity, high energy density science will be advanced as the first priority area of the collaboration. UC Davis is a key member of LLNL’s new Center for High Energy Density Science, which is chartered to conduct distinct research in astrophysics, planetary science, materials, and fusion energy. This center will pioneer fundamental research that enables the predictive control of extreme matter and attract and mentor a new generation of scientists to lead cutting edge research. A major focus of this center is the transfer of knowledge and the creation of a rejuvenated workforce in HED science.
UC Davis and LLNL have a long history of collaboration, stretching back to the 1950s. “It has been a partnership with many remarkable achievements,” says LLNL Director William Goldstein. “The unique nature of UC Davis and the way it approaches and conducts interdisciplinary science presents a great opportunity for us to expand on.”
In addition to the scientific outcomes, the collaboration also fosters significant employment opportunities for UC Davis graduates. Currently, LLNL employs over 900 UC Davis alumni, more than from any other university.
The agreement was signed in Davis, California, on March 30 by Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi of UC Davis and LLNL’s Goldstein, during the Research Investments in the Sciences and Engineering Symposium.
