Anthony Jerant Named Interim Director of the Center for Healthcare Policy and Research
June 30, 2021
Anthony Jerant, professor and chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, has been named interim director of the Center for Healthcare Policy and Research (CHPR).
His appointment, announced by Vice Chancellor of Research Prasant Mohapatra, is effective July 1, following the retirement of current director Joy Melnikow, who has held the role for over a decade.
Serving investigators from a broad range of disciplines on both the Sacramento and Davis campuses, CHPR supports collaboration on impactful research that informs healthcare delivery, quality, outcomes and costs. Under the leadership of Dr. Melnikow, who became director in 2009, CHPR has experienced consistent growth in grant support, faculty membership, and interdisciplinary program development.
“We are very grateful for Dr. Melnikow’s outstanding leadership and wish her the very best,” Mohapatra said. “Dr. Jerant is a long-standing and active member of CHPR. His leadership experience will facilitate the center’s continued progress and impact.”
A member of CHPR since 1998 and later serving as a Core Faculty member, Dr. Jerant has provided guidance to its activities, strategic direction, communication and growth. In 2020, he participated in the center’s highly favorable 15-year Organized Research Review. He will be serving in the role as interim director while also continuing to serve as chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
“We are deeply thankful to Dr. Melnikow for her distinguished leadership and successes growing CHPR’s collaborative research across UC Davis to guide health care policy,” said School of Medicine Dean Allison Brashear. “Dr. Jerant’s proven leadership and expertise will expand CHPR’s interdisciplinary collaborations to shape health care policy and ultimately contribute to improving the lives of all Californians.”
Dr. Jerant obtained his M.D. from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1991. He joined UC Davis as associate director of UC Davis Family Medicine Residency in 1998 and has been active in his service to the university ever since. He has received many awards as a physician, researcher, leader and educator over the last 30 years. An army veteran, Dr. Jerant was awarded three Army Achievement Medals and one Meritorious Service medal before pursuing an impactful career as a physician and researcher at UC Davis.
