STARC Meeting Summary October 2026
Key Discussion Topics:
Research data security, HPC@UCD expansion options, Server Space WG members
Meeting Summary:
This meeting focused on research computing infrastructure and data security requirements at UC Davis. The group discussed forming a working group to identify research projects requiring secure high-performance computing and data security: Simon will send out invitations in the next day or two. Jeffrey and Steve provided updates on HPC expansion plans, noting they are completely out of space and actively turning down researchers, with Academic Surge being the preferred location for expansion that could accommodate 20-30 additional racks. The team explored funding opportunities including NIH CO6 grants and NSF instrumentation grants, though Jeffrey noted these would require campus support and cooperation. Chen-Nee suggested exploring development office funding and donor opportunities for the expansion project, while Jawdat emphasized the need for long-term strategic planning beyond five years. The group also discussed the Campus Research Computing Consortium assessment and the need to update their comparison with peer institutions.
