Meeting Summary:
The focus of the meeting was on research computing and data security, and expansion options for standard HPC and secure environments. Members highlighted potentially underutilized national resources like NSF Access and the need for better support and campus awareness. Participants shared experiences with setup hurdles, IT support gaps, and eligibility complexities for national and external compute resources. The Cuick Trac contract for NIST 800-171 projects has been executed, with a search for suitable pilot use cases and ongoing coordination with SPO and other units. SOM described challenges and costs of secure environments on the health campus, especially for genomics and imaging, and highlighted interest in campus-wide solutions for basic-research investigators. The committee revisited the plan for Simon to charge a working group to address research data security requirements. HPC@UCD reported that it is out of physical space and power, with limited options for expansion and a need for information regarding fiber, power, and cooling infrastructure at potential expansion sites. Members noted existing fiber limitations between clusters and the impact on data movement and cluster integration. Updates included progress on the Service Space and Policy Working Group, the new STARC website, and ongoing campus IT governance efforts.
